Fossa Systems & CMU portugal to launch PocketQube with Alba Orbital

April 24th, 2024 - Glasgow, UK - Alba Orbital, the global leader in PocketQube launch services, is delighted to announce that Fossa Systems have teamed up with CMU Portugal to launch a PocketQube and will be the newest and final client to launch aboard Alba’s Q4 2024 launch in October.

PROMETHEUS-1, a 1P PocketQube is set to be launched in late 2024 and delpoyed by Alba Oribtal’s Albapod deployer. Project PROMETHEUS is led by Alexandre Ferreria da Silva at the Universidade do Minho in Braga, in collaboration with Instituto Superior Tecnico & Carnegie Mellon University. Paulo Fisch, a researcher at Carnegie Mellon University has also helped develop these picosatellites, visiting Portugal in July 2023 to assist the students with the development and building of

PocketQubes are a new class of satellite that can be launched to orbit for as little as 25K Euro. Measuring at just 5cm3 per unit (or ‘P’), these tiny ‘Rubiks-cube-sized' satellites offer affordable access to space, making them the ideal platform for researchers and organisations looking to deploy valuable experiments in space with reduced financial mission risk.

PROMETHEUS-1 is a 1P developed for academical and educational purposes in spirit of the amateur satellites service. The project will display why PocketQubes are a great alternative to launch you own satellite and will be of great value to future low-cost amateur missions This mission will also serve as a milestone to encourage students and researchers to become involved in HAMs and even obtain amateur radio licenses.
